Testimonials

I absolutely love the MCS independent study option because I feel like my children get the benefits of homeschooling without missing out on "going to school" like the other kids. I love the fact that they have the Friday classes so that my boys can participate in speech meet, Valentine exchanges, and "lunchtime" with the other homeschoolers. I also like the support of having a coordinator who visits me monthly to keep me accountable and also to "cheer" me along this journey. I feel like I am able to give the children the best of both worlds...the best of homeschooling and the best parts about being "physically" at school. The teachers of this program have really made this a positive experience for me and for my family.

Over the years our children have had awesome opportunities as a result of
being a part of the Independent Studies program. One year in particular
that stands out is 1992-1993 we had nine deaths in our family, within a
seven month span, in addition to the birth of our youngest son Lance.
During that seven month period of time I had two great aunts, a grandmother
and grandfather, and my mother-in-law in the nursing home. I spent most of
the night at the nursing home as I didn't want anyone to be alone when they
passed on. In the morning I would go home long enough to shower and pickup
Chris, Aaron, and Jackie. Chris and Aaron would pack their school books in
their back packs and off we would go to the nursing homes. Four of my
family was at Woodlawn Nursing Home. Each day we went in with book bags in
tow. The residents would quietly sit and wait for Chris and Aaron to finish
their schoolwork. Once the last book was put into the back pack out came
the game tables. Chris and Aaron would play chess and cards with the
residents. For a period of time, Chris played the organ for the chapel
services held once a week at Woodlawn. Jackie would just set by the bedside
holding onto the hand of one of our family.
Why have we chosen to be a part of the Independent Studies program? First
of all Relationships. I cannot begin to tell you how close our family is as
a result of this opportunity. There are the days that we laugh together and
days that we have cried together. Homeschooling allows you to teach
everyday life principals as they happen. The second reason that we have
chosen to homeschool is to train the heart. Academics are taught from a
book; the heart is trained from example. Each day brings different
situations, and living them together develops the heart for a lifetime.
Deuteronomy 6:6-9 sums it up "Write these commandments that I've given you
today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your
children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in
the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when
you fall into bed at night."
